Mahlet Makonnen joined NAFCU as regulatory affairs counsel in April 2019. In her role, Mahlet advocates on various regulatory developments from federal agencies, including the National Credit Union Administration, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Federal Communications Commission.
Prior to joining NAFCU, Mahlet worked as an Attorney Advisor with the Department of Veterans Affairs. During Law school, Mahlet interned at the Department of Justice where she reviewed the Department’s regulations and at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau where she worked on Dodd-Frank matters.
Mahlet is a graduate of William & Mary Law School and holds a bachelor’s degree in Policy Studies from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University. Makonnen is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association.
