5 things to know this week
NAFCU's widely read NAFCU Today is credit union leaders' go-to source for the latest on issues impacting the credit union industry. For those short on time, here's a roundup of this week's top need-to-know updates and resources.
NCUA to start “Phase 3” of returning to onsite operations
The NCUA announced in a Letter to Credit Unions that they will begin “Phase 3” in their “Resuming Onsite Operations” plan on October 17. The agency stated that onsite examination and supervision activity will resume in all locations. The NCUA also said, “Given the lessons learned from offsite examinations conducted during the pandemic, examiners will seek to strike the right balance between onsite and offsite examination and supervision work.”
NAFCU’s Berger shares a recap of this year’s Congressional Caucus
In an op-ed for CUInsight, NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger shares highlights from the association’s 2022 Congressional Caucus, held earlier this month. Berger underscores the importance of credit unions meeting directly with lawmakers and regulators to share feedback over key industry issues.
The op-ed also dives into highlights from guest speakers including CFPB Director Rohit Chopra, NCUA Chairman Todd harper, Keynote Chris Christie and several Congressional leaders including Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Representatives Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., Tom Emmer, R-Minn., Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., and French Hill, R-Ark.
NAFCU’s Mesack discusses all things CU advocacy
NAFCU Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Greg Mesack sat down with CUInsight Publisher and CEO Lauren Culp to discuss how the association advocates for credit unions by interacting with lawmakers and regulators. Mesack and Culp discussed how inflation has been affecting consumers, noting that credit unions are the most poised to help Americans weather economic pressures.
National Insider Threat Awareness Month
National Insider Threat Awareness Month (NITAM) is recognized every September. Industries and federal agencies work collaboratively to emphasize the importance of deterring, detecting, and mitigating threats from trusted insiders. This year’s theme is focused on critical thinking to help “individuals become less susceptible to various types of risks, to include social engineering, solicitation by adversaries, (foreign and domestic) and information designed to malign.”
At NAFCU’s 2022 Congressional Caucus, former Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center Bill Evanina updated attendees on national security and cyber threats facing credit unions. In his remarks, Evanina stressed the importance of proactive preparation for attacks.
Registration still open for NCUA’s DEI & ACCESS Summit
Registration for the NCUA’s DEI and Advancing Communities through Credit, Education, Stability, and Support (ACCESS) Summit is still open. The free-to-attend event is happening both online and in Herndon, Va. on Nov. 2-4. The summit will bring credit unions and industry professionals together to promote the value of DEI, share DEI and financial inclusion best practices, and develop solutions to industry challenges.
Also during NAFCU’s Congressional Caucus, NCUA Board Member Rodney Hood addressed credit unions to share the importance of DEI and access within the industry, sharing insights on the NCUA’s efforts to bolster financial inclusion and innovation.
