Many primary wins go to pro-CU candidates
June 12, 2014 – A majority of pro-credit union candidates from Tuesday's primaries are on track to win in November's mid-term elections, NAFCU Political Affairs Director Katie Marisic said Wednesday.
The primary loss for Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., holds numerous implications, not only for the House leadership but some key committees. But several other credit union friends were victors this week, and Marisic said NAFCU's political action committee, NAFCU/PAC, will be working to help them win in November.
Here's a look at some of the key candidates:
Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.: Scott is a former credit union board member and has been a vocal proponent of the credit union tax exemption. He is also a cosponsor of S. 635, the "Privacy Notice Modernization Act."Tim Scott - Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine: Collins is a cosponsor of S. 968, the "Small Business Lending Enhancement Act of 2013," which would increase the credit union member business loan cap. She is also a cosponsor of S. 635.
- Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va.: Connolly is the only member of the Virginia delegation who supports an MBL cap increase. "Connolly had a difficult race in the 2012 election," said Marisic, "but his campaign war chest and grassroots efforts have given him a good edge for the general election."
- Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev.: Horsford will face former Mesquite City Council member Cresent Hardy in what is expected to be a hard-fought battle for his state's fourth congressional district. He is on the House Financial Services Committee and is a cosponsor of H.R.688, the House MBL cap increase bill.

NAFCU/PAC is also supporting South Carolina's James Clyburn, who is assistant House Democratic leader, and Republican Reps. Mick Mulvaney and Joe Wilson. Marisic said all three are expected to easily win their general elections.
