NAFCU to CUs: Prepare for cyber threats year-round

SECURITYAs National Cybersecurity Awareness Month comes to a close, NAFCU is reminding credit unions to effectively prepare for and address cyber threats to keep institutions and members safe throughout the year.

"Credit unions must remain vigilant as cyber thieves are constantly working to undermine security protocols through back channels and hacked systems," wrote NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger in a Credit Union Times op-ed to mark the month.

NAFCU consistently advocates for national data and cybersecurity standards on Capitol Hill, which the association believes should hold retailers the same level of protections for consumer data as financial institutions. The association has also flagged the increase in credit unions' costs as they implement efforts to bolster cybersecurity at their institutions.

The association has resources available to ensure credit unions can effectively identify and address cybersecurity concerns:

Earlier in the month, the NCUA reminded credit unions to stay vigilant of cybersecurity issues and highlighted a number of tips and resources available.

Additionally, the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) also has a variety of resources available to help credit unions effectively address cyber threats. During NAFCU's Congressional Caucus in September, NCSC Director Bill Evanina updated attendees on threats facing credit unions, both physically and digitally.

NAFCU will continue to keep credit unions informed of recent trends, resources available, and ways lawmakers and regulators are working to strengthen data and cybersecurity standards.
