NAFCU's call for national data security standards spreads
Jan. 27, 2014 – NAFCU's message urging Congress to establish national data security standards continues to resonate in news reports nationwide in the wake of the recent Target data breach and others.
An article in Computerworld on Thursday said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger "chided retailers for downplaying their role in safeguarding sensitive customer data," in his editorial published in American Banker. It repeated Berger's statement that financial institutions have been subject to data security rules under the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act for years, "and now it's time to implement similar rules for retailers."
POLITICO's Morning Money blog on Thursday also highlighted NAFCU's ongoing push for data security standards. That report drew on Berger's letter to House and Senate leaders Wednesday calling for national security standards for all parties.
NAFCU has updated its resources page on data security to include the association's latest letters, media reports and video from Berger's Jan. 17 interview on Fox Business.
