May 16, 2014 – Credit union volunteers discussed four interaction styles – responding, informing, directing and initiating – to help make board relationships work with networking expert Sarah Michel during NAFCU's Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee Conference Thursday in Maui, Hawaii.

Michel's keynote presentation was designed to help credit union volunteers learn how to interact and connect with others. Conference attendees learned how to communicate with others and how to adapt their own communication styles to create healthy work relationships.

Ben Rogers, Filene Institute

Ben Rogers, research director of the Filene Research Institute, gave a presentation Thursday that reflected on several research reports about credit union governance practices. His presentation also addressed the recruitment and selection habits of credit union boards, how boards can add more value and board's role in credit union mergers.

Breakout sessions Thursday focused on effective team building, best practices for the audit process, how to strengthen the alignment between the board and CEO and the dos and don'ts of crisis management and communication.

Today, the final day of the conference, includes a presentation from Bill Handel, vice president of research and development with Raddon Financial Group. Handel will discuss both how to create a future strategic plan for a credit union and a succession plan. Also presenting today is William McGuire, chairman emeritus of McGuire Performance Solutions, on interest rate risk; and Ross Dawson, entrepreneur and strategy advisor, who will discuss the latest technology and how it can create value for the credit union.

NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger will deliver closing remarks at today's conference.

Next year's Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee Conference is May 11-13, 2015 in Louisville, Ky.
