Hensarling, others ratified for panel chairmanships

Republicans in the House of Representatives ratified recommendations for chairmen for several committees Wednesday, including the appointment of Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, to remain as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee when the 114th Congress opens in January.

Other new chairmen include Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who will chair the House Government Oversight Committee, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who will move from chairing the House Budget Committee to chairing the Ways and Means Committee, and Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, who will be chairman of the Small Business Committee.

House Democrats chose to keep Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as minority leader, and Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., as minority whip.

Last week, Senate Republicans elected Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to be majority leader, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, to be majority whip. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., will be the minority leader for the Democrats, and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., will be minority whip. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., was given the newly created position of strategic policy adviser to the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.
