Senate Republican leadership posts decided

Leadership for a new Republican-led Senate started to take shape Thursday, with now-Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., being elected as majority leader.

The rest of the Senate Republican leadership team was also decided, with John Cornyn, R-Texas, named majority whip; John Thune, R-S.D., named Republican conference chair; John Barrasso, R-Wy., named Republican policy committee chair; and Roy Blunt, R-Mo., named Republican conference vice chair.

Current Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was elected as Senate minority leader for the next Congress beginning in January. Senate Democratic leaders reelected Dick Durbin, D-Ill., as the minority whip; Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., as the Democratic conference committee vice chair and policy committee chair; and Patty Murray, D-Wash, as the Democratic conference secretary. Both Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., were also added to the Democratic leadership team as well, The Washington Post reported.

Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., was elected as the next chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., was elected chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The House is also confirming leadership positions for the new Congress. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, was confirmed Thursday to serve a third term as speaker; Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was reelected to his post; and Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was also reconfirmed. It will be McCarthy's and Scalise's first full term serving in these roles. Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash.; and Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee Greg Walden, R-Ore., were also reelected. Rep. Luke Messer, R-Ind., was elected as Republican policy committee chairman.
