Caucus kicks off with Davis-Frost keynote

NAFCU's Congressional Caucus begins today with a keynote message from former Reps. Tom Davis, R-Va., and Martin Frost, D-Texas, coauthors of a book drawing on their political experience for insight on what could help solve the current legislative stalemate in Washington.

Davis' and Frost's book, "The Partisan Divide," uses examples from their experiences as chairs of the Republican and Democratic House Campaign Committees to illustrate how political gridlock can be overcome.

NAFCU expects more than 350 attendees at this year's Caucus, NAFCU's credit union lobbying event of the year. Credit union leaders from around the country will be talking to lawmakers about data security, the value of the credit union tax exemption, member business lending and the need for comprehensive regulatory relief for credit unions.

NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger will speak privately with attendees during a breakfast held prior to today's opening session. Also scheduled to speak today: Small Business Administration Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network Director Jennifer Shasky-Calvery and Treasury Department's Counselor to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions Anjan Mukherjee.

This week's general sessions feature close to 30 speakers from the Senate, House, NCUA and other federal agencies. Attendees will use the afternoons for Capitol Hill meetings with lawmakers and staff.

Tomorrow's speakers include: Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and David Vitter, R-La., NCUA Office of Consumer Protection Director Gail Laster, and Freddie Mac CEO Donald Layton.

NAFCU's Congressional Caucus general sessions run through Thursday morning. The full schedule of events is online.
