Berger, CU leaders, Hensarling talk issues

NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger and NAFCU-member CEOs met with House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, Tuesday in Dallas, Texas, to discuss the "Financial CHOICE Act" and credit union issues facing the 115th Congress.

Berger described the meeting as positive and noted appreciation for Hensarling's focus on regulatory relief.

"NAFCU and our members thank Chairman Hensarling for his leadership in seeking ways to reduce the regulatory burden on credit unions in Texas and across the country," Berger said. "A reduction in the amount of unnecessary regulation for the nation's community financial institutions would allow institutions do more of what they do best: serve consumers."

The meeting, held in Hensarling's home district, also included Charles Rutan, president and CEO of Southwest Airlines Federal Credit Union, and Brent Sheffield, president and CEO of Advancial Federal Credit Union. Both credit unions are based in Dallas, and Rutan is an at-large member of the NAFCU Board of Directors.

The committee-passed "Financial CHOICE Act," which Hensarling sponsored, includes numerous measures sought by NAFCU for credit union regulatory relief, as well as a provision to repeal the Dodd-Frank Act's Durbin amendment. NAFCU is laying the groundwork for continued efforts to win passage of these measures when the 115th Congress convenes.
