Boehner plans to resign from House next month

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, announced on Friday he would resign from his position and leave Congress at the end of October.

"NAFCU appreciates House Speaker John Boehner's dedication to public service and all that he has done to forward the interests of credit unions," said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. "We wish him well in his retirement."

Boehner's announcement comes as lawmakers work to avoid a government shutdown on Oct. 1. Last week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., offered a "clean" short-term spending bill to fund the government through Dec. 11, which was expected to receive bipartisan support. The vote on this bill may happen this afternoon. Boehner, according to reports, will work to secure House passage.

A previous similar spending bill that would have cut off funding for Planned Parenthood was blocked by Senate Democrats.

The House will hold a speaker election for the leadership position, and Boehner's district in Ohio will hold a special election to fill his seat. To win the speaker position, a candidate will need a majority of votes from all elected members of the House. Republican House members will likely hold a separate vote beforehand to agree on a candidate; Democrats will also put forth a candidate.
