SAR Activity Review

Earlier this week, FinCEN released the most recent issue of the SAR Activity Review - By The Numbers.  You can access it here.  This thing is a gold mine for those of us who have to give presentations on the Bank Secrecy Act.  For those of you who make presentations to your board, this is a true friend.

Example one.  Overall, are credit unions filing more or less SARs?  Click on section one, and then click on Exhibit 6.  (Section one covers depository instututions, so this is where you'll find most of the useful data.) You'll see that for the first half of 2008, credit unions filed 28,299 SARs.  We filed just over 52,000 in 2007.  My math skills are not razor-sharp, but it looks like we're on pace to file more this year than last.

Example two.  Are Idaho SAR filings up or down?  Well, click on secion one, and then click on Exhibit 2.  It lists filings by state.  Idaho? That state produced 943 SARs in 2007.  For the first half of 2008? 476.  It looks like filings remain steady.

These are just a few ideas to get you started.  Enjoy!
