My Career Advice? Look Down.

Written by Anthony Demangone

I have a dear friend who helps people with their careers.

He helps people network.  He helps them tweak their resume to better highlight strengths.  He helps them choose between competing job offers.  He has them focus foward.  His career advice is to look ahead and plan.  This is where I disagree.

My career advice?  Look down.  Focus on where you are, and the job you occupy.

I'm not knocking a thoughtful, planned procession through one's career.  But in my humble opinion, the best thing you can do to get a great job is to do a great job.

Your performance and enhanced reputation will do you more than the finest resume printed on the finest paper.
