Congress' recess continues this week – more opportunity for CUs

The congressional recess has one week to go, providing credit unions ongoing opportunities to reach out to their lawmakers at home about the need for and importance to the economy of credit unions' tax-exempt status, among other top issues.

House members will be in their home districts until April 24, and Senate members will be in their home states until April 23.

NAFCU Director of Political Affairs Dan O'Brien notes that congressional recess periods are ideal times for credit union representatives to tout the benefits credit unions bring to the economy and to push for regulatory relief so that credit unions can serve members more effectively. "NAFCU particularly urges credit union representatives to highlight the recent study commissioned by the association that showed the benefit to consumers from the credit union tax exemption totals $16 billion per year," he said.

Through NAFCU's Grassroots Action Center, credit unions can gather contact information for their lawmakers to set up local meetings, review background information on the important issues and find the tools they need to take action.

Credit unions with questions or that need assistance should reach out to O'Brien at dobrien@nafcu.org or (703) 842-2237.
