This week: Lawmakers work to avoid shutdown; NAFCU meets with FCC, Treasury
Lawmakers in the House are expected to begin work on a stopgap spending measure this week with a goal of passing it before current federal government funding expires Nov. 21. The White House said it will support a month-long extension. Appropriators are also continuing discussions on a dozen fiscal year 2020 spending bills, including the National Defense Authorization Act.
The association's Grassroots Action Center has more information available on credit union issues being considered on Capitol Hill. It also allows credit unions to contact lawmakers directly on these issues.
In addition to continuing its award-winning advocacy efforts, NAFCU will also meet with FCC Commissioner Michael O'Rielly, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Bimal Patel, and officials from the NCUA on exams.
The House Financial Services Committee begins a markup of nine bills tomorrow, including a number related to debt collection and small business lending. The markup is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. Eastern and could continue through Thursday.
The committee also announced it will hold a number of hearings in November on credit union issues, including:
- the role of big data;
- efforts to preserve and promote minority depository institutions; and
- multilateral development institutions.
Also happening this week:
- Today, NAFCU's Regulatory Committee will meet to discuss open comment letters from the NCUA and its recently proposed budget, and the California Consumer Protection Act;
- Thursday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will testify on the economic outlook in front of the House Committee on the Budget;
- Thursday, NAFCU's Regulatory Affairs team will update credit unions on recent developments at the CFPB and NCUA, including anticipated rulemakings during a NAFCU-hosted webinar (free for members); and
- Friday, NAFCU's Task Force on Third Party Vendor Authority will meet to discuss recommendations for regulatory changes.
