113th Congress opens today
Jan. 3, 2013 – Capitol Hill is abuzz with the arrival of new and returning lawmakers today – this is swearing-in day for the members of the 113th Congress – and NAFCU's president and lobbyists are there to welcome them and represent member credit unions.
NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker is headed to the Hill along with Executive Vice President of Government Affairs Dan Berger, Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler and lobbyists Quincy Enoch, Jillian Pevo and Dan O'Brien. The NAFCU representatives will be working their way through the Capitol and the House and Senate office buildings to touch base with credit union friends, many of whom won the Nov. 6 elections with the association's help.
NAFCU lent its support to a number of lawmakers and candidates during last year's elections; of those it helped, 94 percent won Nov. 6. Of the money NAFCU contributed to congressional races, 97 percent went to winning campaigns.
More than 80 newly elected lawmakers will join the rest of the 113th Congress for today's swearing in. Congress convenes at noon, and a vote on House speaker is slated.
Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, is expected to retain the speaker post, even if by a slim margin due to concerns within his own party about the fiscal cliff deal and failure to win passage of the Hurricane Sandy relief package in the 112th Congress.
