43rd CU Cherry Blossom run draws more than 15,000
Sunday's Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run drew nearly 18,000 runners, including NAFCU staff, to the Washington Monument grounds for a competition benefiting Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
"NAFCU is honored to participate in this race benefiting children's hospitals," said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. "Today's event is emblematic of credit unions' long tradition of giving back to their communities and helping to make people's lives better."
Berger helped hold the finish-line ribbon for first-place runners in yesterday's races. The first-place male runner was Stephen Sambu, who ran the course in 43 minutes and 20 seconds (he won last year also); the first-place runner in the corresponding women's group was Mary Wacera, who ran the course in 48 minutes and 35 seconds. Both are from Kenya.
This year's Credit Union Cherry Blossom event raised $525,852 for Children's Miracle Network hospitals. NAFCU has been a partner in the run since 2002. This was the 43nd year the run was held and the 14th sponsored by credit unions.
Since credit unions began sponsoring the race, more than $7 million has been raised for children's hospitals.
