FHFA extends REO eviction moratorium through September

HousesThe FHFA Friday announced an extension on the government-sponsored enterprises' (GSE) moratorium on single-family real estate owned (REO) evictions until Sept. 30, 2021. The moratorium was previously set to expire July 31.

The REO eviction moratorium applies to properties that have been acquired by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac through foreclosure or deed-in-lieu of foreclosure transactions.

“The pandemic continues to have an outsized impact on the ability of Americans to meet their monthly rent or mortgage payments. Today’s extension of the eviction moratorium protects particularly vulnerable Americans who otherwise would be at risk of losing a place to live,” said FHFA Acting Director Sandra Thompson in the announcement.

Of note, the FHFA announced last week new eviction protections for tenants of multifamily properties with mortgages backed by the GSEs that are subject to eviction for nonpayment of rent.
