House OKs bill to rescind 'net neutrality' rule

April 11, 2011 – The House voted 240-179 Friday on a measure that would rescind a Federal Communications Commission rule requiring fairness in the provision of Internet access but reports say it is unlikely to win Senate passage.

A rule to promote net neutrality, a concept which NAFCU supports, was approved by the FCC in December. It is aimed at preventing Internet access providers from blocking access to or making it more difficult to get certain sites, or limiting bandwidth available to specific classes of users.

Friday's House vote on rule rescission, H. J. Res. 37, was almost straight along party lines. The measure now goes to the Senate, where NAFCU lobbyists say action is unlikely. The president has said he would veto the measure if it reaches his desk.
