NAFCU Caucus Day 2: Metsger, Donnelly, Cruz and more

NAFCU's Congressional Caucus general sessions resume today with remarks on credit union issues from more than a dozen lawmakers and regulators, including NCUA Chairman Rick Metsger, former presidential candidate and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Sens. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., and Ben Sasse, R-Neb.

Metsger has served on the NCUA Board since 2014 and has served as chairman since May.

Donnelly and Sasse spearheaded a letter signed by 70 senators urging CFPB to grant credit unions relief from more rules through the bureau's authority under the Dodd-Frank Act. Donnelly also serves on the Senate Banking Committee.

Cruz, a candidate in this past year's Republican presidential primary, was also a signatory to the letter. Cruz also cosponsored NAFCU-backed legislation that would fight the Justice Department's Operation Choke Point Initiative.

Caucus attendees today will also hear from the following:

• Harriet Tregoning, principal deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Community Planning and Development at the Department of Housing and Urban Development;
• Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., member of the Senate Small Business Committee;
• Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., author of NAFCU-sought legislation to require that rules be tailored to financial institutions' risk profiles;
• Rep. Frank Guinta, R-N.H., author of NAFCU-backed legislation that would establish an extended exam cycle for well-run credit unions;
• Rep. Sandy Levin, D-Mich., the House Ways and Means Committee's ranking member;
• House Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.;
• Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C., member of the House Financial Services Committee;
• Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., member of the House Financial Services Committee; and
• Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., member of the House Financial Services Committee.
