April 7, 2014 – The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run yesterday was a huge success as 15,000-plus runners, which included a handful of NAFCU staff, ran through downtown Washington, D.C., to benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
"It is an honor and privilege to be part of this event," said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. "This event truly embraces the credit union spirit of giving back to their communities and helping those who need it most."
NAFCU's Berger assisted, helping to hold the finish-line ribbon for first-place finishers in two of yesterday's races. There were four running events held yesterday in Washington, D.C., a 10-mile run, 5K run/walk and both the U.S. track and field men's and women's 10-mile championships.
This year, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom event yielded $487,000 in donations to Children's Miracle Network hospitals, with $102,000 of that amount raised by the runners themselves.
NAFCU has been a partner in the run since 2002. This was the 42nd year the run was held and the 13th sponsored by credit unions.
This year's race raised $487,000 for children's hospitals. |
The winning female of the 10-mile race was Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia with a time of 52:05. The top male runner was Stephen Sambu of Kenya with a time of 45:29. The 2014 U.S. women's 10-mile championship was won by Janet Bawcom of Flagstaff, Ariz., who crossed the finish line at 52:12. Christo Landry of Ann Arbor, Mich., placed sixth overall in the men's competition with a time of 46:41 to win the 2014 U.S. men's 10-mile championship.
