NAFCU meets with Rep. Luetkemeyer, discusses ways to bolster CU industry
NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger met with House Small Business Committee Ranking Member Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., Wednesday to discuss several topics of importance to credit unions. NAFCU Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Greg Mesack, Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler, and Senior Director of Legislative Affairs Chad Adams were also in attendance.
Luetkemeyer, who is also the Ranking Member of the House Consumer Protection and Financial Institutions Subcommittee, has championed a number of issues important to the credit union industry. He has frequently shared opposition against the United States Post Office’s pilot program offering paycheck-cashing services, which quietly launched in September of last year. Luetkemeyer wrote to Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) Chairman Michael Kubayanda stating that the banking pilot program has not been approved by the PRC and is in direct violation of the Postal Accountability & Enhancement Act.
Of note, Luetkemeyer has been instrumental in the strong wave of opposition against the Small Business Administration's (SBA) proposal to have explicit direct lending authority. Last year, Luetkemeyer introduced NAFCU-backed legislation that would prohibit the SBA from making direct loans under the 7(a) loan program.
NAFCU continues to work with Rep. Luetkemeyer and other lawmakers to ensure credit union priorities remain top of mind for Congress.
