McWatters nomination to NCUA sent to Senate

The president on Tuesday sent the Senate his nomination of Mark McWatters to succeed Michael Fryzel on the NCUA Board.

Fryzel's term expired Aug. 2. McWatters' term on the agency board would continue through Aug. 2, 2019.

McWatters was on the Troubled Assets Relief Program Congressional Oversight Panel from 2009 to 2011. Before that, he served as counsel to Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, now chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. He's currently the assistant dean for graduate programs and an adjunct professor at the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.

The president announced his plan to nominate McWatters last month. NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger contacted McWatters shortly after that announcement, offering congratulations. "We look forward to continuing our work with the NCUA to ensure a positive regulatory environment for credit unions," he said.

Also on Tuesday, the president nominated Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., to be the U.S. ambassador to China. NAFCU lobbyists are meanwhile watching for any new draft bills coming from Baucus, who could vacate his Senate seat before year-end.
