Metsger nomination moves to full Senate
July 19, 2013 – The president's nomination of Rick Metsger to the NCUA Board was approved by the Senate Banking Committee Thursday and is headed to the full Senate, where it awaits a vote on confirmation.
The Senate Banking Committee also approved the nominations of Rep. Mel Watt, D-N.C., as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency; Jason Furman to the Council of Economic Advisers; and Kara Stein, Mary Jo White and Michael Piwowar to the Securities and Exchange Commission. White, currently the SEC chairman, is nominated to a term that continues into 2019.
All nominees were approved by voice vote except Watt, who was approved on a party-line vote of 12-10. All are expected to be voted on by the full Senate as early as the end of this month.
In his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last month, Metsger promised "continued safety and soundness of our nation's credit union system" if he is confirmed to the NCUA Board. Metsger was nominated by the president in May to succeed Gigi Hyland on the NCUA Board. Hyland vacated the post in October, her term having expired in August 2011. Metsger's term would last to Aug. 2, 2017.
