CUs get cybersecurity, election insights at Caucus
To help credit unions address challenges currently facing the industry and prepare for future changes, the second day of NAFCU's Congressional Caucus featured sessions on cybersecurity and the 2020 presidential election.
Bill Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, updated members on national security and threats facing credit unions – both physically and digitally. He stressed the threat of foreign influence and what credit unions can do to protect their institutions from interference, and also cautioned against insider-threats.
Evanina also encouraged credit union executives to meet regularly with their information security officers to better understand what the firm is doing to protect private data. Another operational challenge credit unions need to consider is the hiring process to reduce internal fraud risks.
“You are often times the victim, we are asking you to be part of the solution,” Evanina said as he asked credit unions to support national security.
The NCUA staff also provide NAFCU members that are part of the regulatory and cybersecurity committees an update on the agency’s examination modernization initiative.
NAFCU has cybersecurity compliance resources available online, including a cybersecurity assessment tool workbook; a webinar available on-demand also details how to identify cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities.
Following Evanina, Jason Cabel Roe took the Caucus stage to update NAFCU’s members on battleground states heading into the 2020 presidential election, as well as other campaigns to watch. He also provided insights into President Donald Trump's ratings.
