This week: NAFCU continues advocacy push for CU priorities
This week, advocacy on credit union industry priorities, including the fiscal year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), and more remain top of mind for NAFCU.
NAFCU last week wrote to the House Armed Services Committee ahead of their subcommittee markups of the FY22 NDAA to reiterate the association's longstanding call to prevent efforts to allow all banks to operate rent-free on military bases.
The association consistently advocates against this bank-sought provision in the NDAA and has successfully kept it from being included. In addition, the groups called for similar protection in a letter to the Senate Armed Services Committee ahead of its full committee markup in July. NAFCU will remain engaged with both the Senate and House Armed Services Committees as they consider the FY2022 NDAA to ensure this provision is again not included.
On Capitol Hill, lawmakers are beginning to prepare for their August recess. NAFCU will monitor several Senate Banking Committee hearings:
- tomorrow, a hearing will discuss protecting consumers from financial fraud and scams as the economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic;
- tomorrow, a hearing to provide oversight of federal financial depository regulators will include NCUA Chairman Todd Harper and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as witnesses; and
- Thursday, a nomination hearing for Julia Gordon to the position of Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and David Uejio, current acting director of the CFPB, to the position of Assistant Secretary of HUD.
Of note at NAFCU, the association is preparing to host its Virtual Summer Regulatory Compliance School one week from tomorrow, with sessions on a number of key issues, as well as live Q&A sessions.
The conference – taking place Aug. 10-12 and Aug. 17-20 – is designed to help compliance professionals build their comprehensive understanding of federal regulations that impact operations.
Stay tuned to NAFCU Today for the latest out of Washington.
