This week: Congress on recess; NAFCU secures key lawmakers for Caucus

Capitol HillAs the House and Senate are in their home districts and states for the August recess, NAFCU continues to add notable lawmakers and officials to the Congressional Caucus lineup. The association's annual Congressional Caucus brings hundreds of credit union representatives to Washington, D.C., to join its award-winning advocacy efforts. See who's coming.

Registration for Congressional Caucus, happening Sept. 8-11, is still open here. This year's event is sponsored by Visa; stay tuned to NAFCU Today and #NAFCUCaucus on Twitter for updates leading up to Caucus.

New to the lineup are a number of credit union champions, including:

  • Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., is ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, leading on issues related to the National Flood Insurance Program, regulatory relief and data security. He also opposes allowing the U.S. Postal Service to provide banking services.
  • Rep. Lacy Clay, D-Mo., is chair of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development and Insurance, and is active on regulatory relief, data security, and housing finance reform issues.
  • Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, is chairwoman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion and has introduced NAFCU-supported legislation aimed at increasing financial literacy and access to credit scores.
  • Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., is chairwoman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship, and Capital Markets, and has introduced legislation to help financial institutions comply with new customer due diligence and beneficial ownership rules under the Bank Secrecy Act. She is also a leader on data security.
  • Rep. Ted Budd, R-N.C., is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and was part of the bipartisan group who introduced legislation to halt the implementation of the current expected credit loss (CECL) standard. He has also voiced concerns about unclear website accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and a cosponsor of legislation to stop and study CECL. He has also sought relief under the TILA/RESPA integrated mortgage disclosures (TRID) rule.

Renowned journalists Gretchen Carlson and Major Garrett are this year's keynote speakers, and NCUA Board Chair Rodney Hood is set to address Caucus attendees Tuesday, Sept. 10, on his priorities for the agency. NAFCU has also secured several administration officials for Caucus, including President Donald Trump's Acting Chief of Staff and Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Mark Calabria.

Also during Caucus, NAFCU will recognize a credit union champion who goes to great lengths in his or her grassroots and political efforts. Nominations for the 2019 Paul Revere Award are open until Aug. 16; learn more here.

More information on some of the top issues that'll be covered at Caucus can be found through NAFCU's Grassroots Action Center. Credit unions can also find contact information for lawmakers to connect with them during the August recess.
